A bride-to-be is threatening to cancel her wedding after she discovered her family was placing bets on how long her marriage would last.

The distraught woman said she was due to walk down the aisle at the end of this month – but she’s now considering a courthouse wedding.

“My family were making bets on how long it would take my fiancé to regret marrying me,” she wrote in a Reddit thread.

“My cousin told me my family were making bets on how long it would take my fiancé to realise he wasn’t getting the ‘good little wife’ he was expecting and regret marrying me.”

But when she confronted her family, they insisted the bets were “just a harmless joke”.

“They said I didn’t have the personality to be a submissive housewife which a man like my fiancé would obviously want,” she said.

Rubbing salt into the wound, her sister-in-law made another insulting joke.

“She made a joke about making sure my fiancé didn’t realise until after the wedding while I was confronting them,” she said.

“I was already upset but her joke just made it 10 times worse and I told everybody I was going to cancel the wedding.”

However, her family are refusing to let her cancel the special day.

“My family told me I couldn’t do that because people would talk and my future in-laws wouldn’t be happy about it but I told them I didn’t care and they could tell everybody why I never had a wedding ceremony,” she said.

“My parents are telling me not to cancel the wedding as I would regret it in the long run and it would be embarrassing for our family and me for it to be cancelled now but I’m not backing down.”

Her post was met with more than 1,000 comments – with a majority of people suggesting the bride should go ahead with the wedding but “uninvite” her family members who were involved in the betting.

“This is the way! Cancelling it only makes you seem weaker, have the wedding without them, and prove them wrong,” one wrote.

Another said: “Uninvite family and hire security. Or even better, just elope! Sc**w them and just have the day for you and your husband.”

While one added: “I agree. They are being incredibly disrespectful.”
