I was charged eye-watering price for fish and chips on the NC500 – the bill left me speechless
A WOMAN who forked out £50 for fish and chips has said she only ordered it because it was the cheapest thing on the menu.
Sharon Heppenstall was travelling the NC500 with her sister Sue when they stopped at the Kylesku Hotel in Sutherland.

Sharon said they had about a 200 mile drive and the pair decided to look for somewhere to find some food.
She said: “We were starving but we couldn’t find anywhere to eat.
“No where was open but we say a sign for the Kylesku Hotel and thought why not.”
Sharon said the restaurant was fairly quiet but there was a beautiful view and they were too hungry to keep going.
She added: “I said to my sister ‘I know it’s pricey but we might not find anywhere else.”
The pair ordered two glasses of wine plus two portions of the fish and chips.
And the 55-year-old said ordered the fish and chips because it was the cheapest thing on the menu.
The dish came with two little bits of chips, a handful of peas and about eight chips stacked in a jenga like tower.
The total cost of the meal came to an eye-watering £71.75 including £49.90 for the fish and chips, £12 for a glass of Pinot Grigio and £9.25 for a glass of Malbec.
She added the food was really nice and she took to a NC500 Facebook group to praise the food and the view she had.
But the comments began blowing up with everyone saying how expensive their meal had been.
Many people slammed the restaurant for the eye-watering bill.
The bill was even shared to other NC500 affiliated and local social media pages.
The backlash comes after The Kylesku Hotel was the first acquisition of Highland Coast Hotels Ltd in April 2021 – a business set up with the apparent intention of purchasing hotels along the NC500 route.
Locals now believe this changing of hands is primarily to blame for the soaring prices seen here.
The hairdresser said: “I would never grumble on the price of the meal and I actually posted about how nice the meal was.
“Someone else pointed out the price to me in the comments.
“On the whole I couldn’t really complain about the service.
“The staff were very nice and very good.
“It’s not their fault about the prices.”
Her whole experience ended in disaster when she tripped and fell as she was leaving.
Sharon was left with cuts and bruises on her face.
But she said the staff were excellent and brought her back in, gave her some ice and even offered her and Sue a free brandy or two.
Sharon added: “I went flat on my face, hands and knee.
“The staff were really helpful, they were good to me.”
Sharon and her sister had travelled from Wakefield in Yorkshire in a 21-year-old Ford Puma for the journey.
They did six different places in six nights before heading back to Yorkshire.
The restaurant recently said they were reducing the price of their fish and chips down from £24.95 to £19.
The Scottish Sun contacted the Kylesku Hotel for an update.
