For most married couples, their wedding anniversary is a date to remember.
It’s usually marked with fine dining at a swanky restaurant, coupled with plenty of gazing longingly into each other’s eyes and whispering sweet nothings.
But for Natalija and Vanja Macura, their wedding anniversary is not quite an annual celebration.
The Dianella couple tied the knot on February 29, 2020 after getting together almost 15 years ago — meaning February 29, 2024 is technically their “first” wedding anniversary.
“We’re not very romantic people so we’re not big on celebrating anniversaries and stuff,” Ms Macura said.
“It (February 29, 2020) happened to be a long weekend, so it was just one of those things where we knew we were going to remember the date and we were going to celebrate it once every four years, which is fine.
“(In the years since) we haven’t even acknowledged it,” she laughed.
But the Macuras are not alone.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, February 29 was the fifth most popular day for people to get married in 2020, with 1517 couples getting hitched on the leap year date.
The Macuras tied the knot at a Highgate Orthodox Church followed by a reception at Crown Towers, a celebration Ms Macura describes as a “big fat Serbian wedding”.
“We’re both Serbian so it was like a traditional Serbian wedding with a modern twist . . . we did the traditional (custom of) buying of the bride, but then we also had a Lamborghini come pick up my husband,” Ms Macura said.
To commemorate the long-overdue milestone, the couple plan to travel to Yallingup this weekend with their two young children for a getaway.
