A cracked fuel line sensor housing could allow gas to leak, potentially leading the Alfa Romeo Giulia to catch fire

Stellantis has expanded a recall of vehicles equipped with a fuel line sensor from supplier Hutchinson to include the 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia. It is joined by the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli, which were called back for repairs last month.
The components were built in Poland and, for a short period, a production error may have led the fuel line sensor to crack. If that occurs, a fuel leak may follow, and that’s obviously very bad news.

Alfa Romeo reports that the leak may prevent gas from making it to the engine, starving it of fuel, and causing the vehicle to stall. That could leave the Giulia without power on the road, exposing occupants and other road users to unnecessary danger.
However, the problem may be more immediate than that, too. In rare cases, the leaking fuel could come into contact with a hot surface, and a fire could spark. Alfa Romeo does not say how many warranty reports it has received relating to this issue, but Maserati said that it was not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this problem in its vehicles.
Owners of these models may be alerted to an issue if they smell gas, or if they notice reduced engine performance. In all, 261 Giulias from the 2021 model year were equipped with the bad fuel line sensors — that’s in addition to the 28 Maserati Ghiblis and 30 Quattroportes that were previously identified as being affected by this problem.
To remedy it, Alfa Romeo will start reaching out to owners on June 19, and will ask them to return their Giulia to a nearby dealer. There, a technician will remove the problematic fuel line sensor housing and replace it with a new one.
