Angels Announcers Slam Umpires for Game-Ending Call

The Los Angeles Angels broadcast booth was stunned when umpires reviewed a game-ending play and still appeared to get the call wrong, resulting in a loss for the team.

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Angels right fielder Jo Adell tried to steal second base to get in scoring position. He was initially called out, but the play was reviewed extensively over the next few minutes. From the additional angles, Adell’s cleat appeared to touch the base before he was tagged out by shortstop Gunnar Henderson.

Then, the crowd at Angel Stadium got the news: the call on the field was upheld, meaning Adell was out and the game was over.

“Oh, that is absurd!” announcer Wayne Randazzo said. “That is absurd! That’s a joke!”

Analyst Mark Gubicza added that the call was “unbelievable.”

“Absolutely ridiculous,” Randazzo continued. “It is clear on the replay that Adell was safe, and it is a ridiculous way to end this game. That’s garbage!

“The Baltimore Orioles end up with a 6-5 win. Could not have been any clearer on the replay that Adell hit the bag before the tag from Henderson.”

The producers then showed the replays again.

“His foot is on the base!” Gubicza said. “Foot is on the base, and then the tag.”

“I mean, I don’t know what else you need to see there,” Randazzo added. “Hits the bag. The tag not there yet.”
