Daily Routine in Jail
Kejriwal will be situated in Tihar’s jail No 2, alongside his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, who is in jail No 1. Former Health Minister Satyendar Jain occupies Jail No 7, while Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh resides in jail No 5.At 6:30 am, Kejriwal and fellow inmates will start their day. They will receive a modest breakfast consisting of tea and a few slices of bread. Lunchtime falls between 10:30 and 11 am, offering a meal comprising dal, sabzi and a choice of five rotis or rice. Between noon and 3 pm, prisoners are confined to their cells. At 3:30 pm, they receive a cup of tea accompanied by two biscuits. Dinner is served early at 5:30 pm, followed by the prisoners being confined to their cells for the night by 7 pm.
Facilities and Requests
Except during scheduled prison activities like meals and lock-up, Kejriwal has the liberty to watch television. He can access between 18 and 20 channels, encompassing news, entertainment, and sports. Medical assistance is accessible around the clock for emergencies. Kejriwal, who has diabetes, will undergo regular check-ups throughout his jail time.
Demands Made by Kejriwal
Arvind Kejriwal made several requests, including the provision of medicines, permission to carry three books – Bhagavad Geeta, Ramayan, and How Prime Ministers Decide – a religious locket, a special diet, and a table and chair in his cell.
Support and Protests
Meanwhile, A protest erupted on Monday outside Tihar Jail ahead of the arrival of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was sent by a court here to judicial custody till April 15. Scores of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers, carrying party flags and wearing T-shirts with ‘Main Bhi Kejriwal’ printed on them, gathered outside the jail entrance.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s recent 15-day remand to Tihar Jail has garnered attention for his special requests for reading material during his incarceration. Sentenced by the Rouse Avenue Court until April 15, Kejriwal has sought permission to have three books with him: the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, and “How Prime Minister Decides” by Neerja Choudhary.
Kejriwal’s lawyers have requested permission from the court for him to take these books to jail. He has also asked for necessary medicines while he’s in jail.
It’s not yet decided which section of Tihar Jail Kejriwal will be in. Other Aam Aadmi Party leaders like Sanjay Singh, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and K. Kavita are in different sections.
Arvind Kejriwal’s ED custody
Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 and was first kept in their custody until March 28. Later, the court extended his ED custody until April 1.
On March 28, Judge Kaweri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Court extended Arvind Kejriwal’s custody under the Enforcement Directorate (ED), stating that there were “sufficient reasons” for the extension. However, she permitted him to meet his family members and lawyers during this period.
The ED had sought an extension of Kejriwal’s custody for seven more days, but the court extended it by four days until April 1, citing “sufficient reasons” based on the ED’s submissions. The probe agency stressed the importance of confronting Kejriwal with the evidence collected and statements recorded during the investigation.
