Aussie customer’s fury after Perth café charges unexpected fee to toast sandwich

A disgruntled diner is gobsmacked after a café charged him an extra 90 cents to toast his sandwich.

The man ordered what he described was an “average tasting” sandwich at a café in Perth.

To make matters worse, he asked for his lunch to be toasted — only to discover the option came at a price.

“Perth café standard… $14.90 for an average tasting sandwich. They charged 90 cents to toast it!” he said anonymously on Reddit.

His post was met with more than 140 comments, many furious over the toasting fee.

“I’ve never been charged to have it toasted before… that’s outrageous,” one yelled.

Another agreed, saying: “Charging 90c to toast is absolutely outrageous.”

One added: “Absolute joke.”

Not everyone concurred with the customer’s anger, with one pointing out: “And yet, you bought it, which is why businesses can get away with taking the p*** like this.”

Another suggested: “That’s on you. I’m assuming it was in a display case and you chose the toasted option?”

One added: “Did you not see the prices before you ordered? You are not just paying for the sandwich, you are paying for all the operational costs that go into the café. I know it’s overpriced but that’s what you pay for convenience.”

But some jumped to the customer’s defence, with one saying: “You can’t just change your mind after they say the price, that might start some kind of… disagreement!

“No, better to hold your tongue, snap a picture of your s****y sandwich, and seethe about it on the internet later… This was a tremendous rip-off.”

In early 2023, Hannah Bowman, a podcast producer from Sydney, said she was “shook to the core” after being charged a “wild” amount of money for a bagel at a café amid the rising cost of living.

She was going for a walk at lunchtime when she spotted a “delicious” smoked salmon bagel in the window.

As she pulled her card out to pay, she was lost for words when an employee told her, “That’ll be $25 please”.

‘Is this a mistake?’

“Guys, I’ve been the victim of a heinous crime,” Hannah said.

“I just went (to) buy a coffee and I walked past a little bakery and I saw this bagel and I thought, I’m gonna just buy my lunch now. That looks delicious, cool I’ve not tried this café before.

“When I went to tap they said, ‘That’ll be $25 please’. For one smoked salmon bagel? $25 — is this a mistake? Can that be real?”

She couldn’t believe the “wild” price — but she ended up paying for the bagel before walking out in disbelief.

“I feel sick,” she said.

“Honestly I think I was in shock and didn’t realise what had happened until I walked out.”
