Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Max Eberl as the club’s new sporting director.
The 50-year-old, who had spells at Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, has signed a contract with Bayern Munich until the summer of 2027. He replaces former Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who was let go at the end of the 2022-23 season.
Eberl will start at his new club on March 1 and be tasked with appointing Thomas Tuchel’s successor after it was announced that Bayern Munich and the German coach will part ways at the end of the season.
Eberl said: “I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is something special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role. The job as sports director is a big challenge that I will tackle with a lot of respect and humility but with even more anticipation.
“Together with everyone here, I would like to do everything I can to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and bring joy to its fans.”

Eberl progressed through Bayern’s youth teams as a player and made one appearance for the club’s first team in 1991. He later represented VfL Bochum, Greuther Furth, and Borussia Monchengladbach before retiring in 2005.
After announcing his retirement, he became Borussia Monchengladbach’s academy manager in 2005. He held that position for three years before becoming sporting director in 2008.
During his time at Borussia Monchengladbach, the club completed the signings of Marco Reus from Rot Weiss Ahlen in 2009 and Granit Xhaka from FC Basel in 2012.
After 14 years, he took up a similar role at fellow Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in 2022. He helped the side lift the German Super Cup, beating Bayern 3-0 in August 2023. Eberl left RB Leipzig in September 2023.
Bayern, who are eight points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, are next in action against SC Freiburg on Friday.
