Boy, 16, caught allegedly breaking into Cairns police station

A boy wanted over the assault of an elderly man has been caught trying to break into a Queensland police station.

The 16-year-old Cairns boy had evaded arrest since the March 18 incident, when he allegedly assaulted the elderly man in Manunda.

On Monday, he allegedly jumped the fence of a compound at the Smithfield police station.

Officers watched the boy on CCTV monitors as he “entered an area of the station off-limits to the public”, police said in a statement.

The boy was confronted by police, when he allegedly told them “he was looking at a bike parked beside the back door”.

A search of police records revealed the boy was a suspect in the assault of the elderly man more than a month earlier.

He has been charged with seriously assaulting a person aged over 60, trespassing and failing to appear in court.

He was denied bail to appear in Cairns Childrens Court at a later date.
