Businesses on Claisebrook Lake claim a black cormorant population increase is driving customers away

East Perth businesses claim they’re losing money over a sh*tty little bird poo problem that is driving customers away.

Owner and manager of the Claisebrook Bar, Linda White, said there had been an explosion in the population of little black cormorants nesting in the area.

The massive flock of birds are splattering the area with bird droppings.

“People walking by cover their noses because of the smell,” she told ABC Perth.

“Even when we’ve got the doors closed, as soon as you open it, the stench comes in.”

Ms White told the outlet that pedestrians used her venue’s bathrooms to clean cormorant crap off several times a week.

Local man Skye told the outlet that he had been “sh*t on like three or four times”.

A City of Perth survey found that the smell and bird poo was an issue for residents.

“Since April, more high-pressure cleaning has been scheduled with cleaning tripled from once per week to three times per week,” a spokesperson said.

The Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2016 means it’s illegal to disturb the birds, but empty nests can be removed.

Local residents have blamed the removal of trees in Bayswater for the birds relocating there.

Ms White thinks a net should be put over the trees to prevent them from nesting there next breeding season.
