City of Fremantle introduces extra security measures to put a stop to anti-social behaviour at beach parties

Police shut down two weekend raves at Port Beach on the same night that another was held just across the river mouth, forcing authorities to close access to Fremantle’s South Mole.

The City of Fremantle has reacted to escalating concerns over the frequent parties by installing CCTV and increasing security patrols after complaints were made about damage to property and abuse towards early-morning swimmers.

The extra security comes after the Port Beach Polar Bears swim club called for authorities to put a stop to the raves.

Polar Bears secretary Trevor Pedler said up to 150 people had been partying almost every weekend since the start of the year.

“We have had to put with belligerent partygoers in the carpark and around our club rooms,” he said. “They are still going until 9am.

“They have left rubbish all over the beach and there is no toilet up there so there has been urination and defecation on the beach.

“Our members have been abused with profanities after being asked for drugs.”

Mr Pedler claimed the partygoers had allegedly broken a tap, graffitied on the public toilets, trampled plants, and broken fencing.

“We would like to have them stopped completely it is just not the place for these sorts of things,” he said.

The swimming group reported the events to the City of Fremantle and WA Police.

South of the river mouth, Fremantle Ports closed South Mole — an operational area owned, controlled and maintained by the authority — on Monday after a different weekend party.

The authority also revealed there had been a significant increase in backpackers camping on South Mole, with more than 30 vans parked at the narrow peninsula on at least one night.

A spokesperson told PerthNow most of the vans were believed to be used by “young travellers” and the increase in camping was not “a homeless issue”.

A City of Fremantle spokeswoman said the rave parties did not have permits from the city.

“The City of Fremantle is aware of recent gatherings at Port Beach and shares the community’s concern for vandalism and anti-social behaviour,” she said.

“Our community safety after-hours team has been proactively patrolling these gatherings and escalating unlawful behaviour to WA Police for their attention when observed.”

She said the city had also deployed a mobile CCTV camera to the area as a visible deterrent, removed graffiti from changeroom walls when it was reported in January, and arranged for the repair of damaged fencing near the carpark.

“The city is committed to working with the Port Beach Polar Bears and local police to resolve the situation, with community safety of the utmost importance,” she said.

A WA Police spokeswoman said they had been made aware of the gatherings and patrons complied when police shut down two ‘gatherings early on Saturday.
