C.J. Stroud will be the Houston Texans’ starting quarterback on opening day when they face the Baltimore Ravens.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans made the decision on Sunday night, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Stroud was the No. 2-overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.
“It’s been over the course of the entire process of OTAs, training camp, preseason games,” Ryans told reporters on Sunday. “Just seeing the complete product and knowing C.J.’s desire to continue to get better.”
While the news was made official on Sunday, it was nothing more than a formality of what was expected to be his job.
The Texans had certainly used him during the preseason as if he would be their starter once the regular season began.
Stroud played just two series during Houston’s preseason finale against the Saints on Sunday.
He went 2-for-4 for 16 yards and a 100.0 passer rating.
The Ohio State product even threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason.
It came in the first quarter on a three-yard pass to Nico Collins in the end zone.
Stroud finished the preseason completing 11 of 20 passes for 89 yards.
He also had one interception in that span as well.
The Texans open the regular season in Baltimore on Sept. 10.
“We know we’re not where we need to be as a team overall,” Ryans said. “We all have to continue to get better. It’s just having the mindset to do that. CJ is just along with all our other guys who know we have to get better.”
