Closing the Gap: Damning report condemns ‘weak’ progress on addressing Indigenous disadvantage

Steps to close the gap of Indigenous disadvantage have been “weak” and “piecemeal”, according to a damning report which accuses governments of failing to grasp the scale of change required to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The new Productivity Commission report highlighted numerous examples of decisions which worsened Indigenous disadvantage – including the claim the WA Government’s failed to properly consult with First Nations people before its contentious overhaul of cultural heritage laws in 2021.
