David and Candice Warner reveal the cricketer’s ‘healhy’ allowance and pre-game meal he avoids on Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast

Aussies are used to seeing the Warners on TV, the back page of newspapers, and pleading for missing luggage on social media.

Now, in a rare peak behind the curtain, retired Test cricketer David appeared alongside his loyal wife and ex-athlete Candice on the Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast to dispel rumours and reveal their truths.

So connected are the pair, Candice admitted the cricketer would communicate with her while batting during games.

“There were times when he would give me signals when he was out in the field, he’d give these little signals to me and that’s I knew that he was on, relaxed, and I knew that he was going to make a big score,” Candice said.

Admitting she typically felt at ease watching her husband go about his business, the Ashes series in 2019 became nerve-wracking when an English fast bowler appeared to have his measure.

“Stuart Broad was just …. getting him out,” she joked. “Sorry darling.”

Arguing he doesn’t “ever feel pressure”, David didn’t appreciate the media focusing on him personally in the lead up to his retirement as he insisted on putting the team first.

Fiercely protective of her husband, Candice said she caught every nasty word spoken about the trolled star through various tumultuous periods of his career.

“I’ve got a little list of all the people that have said some really horrible things and there’s been times where I can’t bite my tongue.”

Far from a team when it comes to finances, listener’s ears may have pricked up when the couple revealed who has access to their shared bank accounts.

Asked if David ever splurged on made rash purchases, he responded: “How long have you got?”

Candice was quick to confirm she was the more sensible of the two.

“I’m pretty conservative, but David definitely is the spender,” she said.

“So David’s got an allowance, it’s a healthy allowance so don’t think I’ve got him by the b*lls and he can’t enjoy his life.”

David responded: “I’ve had it declined once, and said, ‘Have I been paid?’”

Illustrating the lack of concern or access over his fortune, Candice remarked, “David doesn’t even have the app, the phone banking app on his phone.”

“He likes to spend… and I just make sure the mortgage is paid, the bills. As long as he can use his card.”

But there are shortcomings to Candice’s ploy.

“That’s what the worst thing is,” David responded. “If I want to surprise Candice or buy her a present, I can’t.”

“Because then she’ll see the transaction come up.”

Another revelation came in the form of pre-game meals, with David insisting he would never eat “duck before a game” — hoping to avoid pre-empting a score of zero.

The cricketing journey doesn’t stop for the family following David’s retirement after 112 tests and more than a decade in Australia’s top order.

At 37, the much-maligned star will again spend time touring away from home — playing various T20 competitions around the world for the next few months.

He will line up for the Delhi Capitals when the IPL begins on March 22.
