A “drunk” Ohio dad was arrested for trying to come to his son’s rescue at a homecoming dance after the teen was involved in an altercation, police said.
Steven Stephens, 43, was taken into custody on Saturday after ignoring orders from a school resource officer holding his 18-year-old son and others in custody while awaiting Anderson High School officials to dole out punishments to the bickering teens, FOX 19 reported.
The officer at the scene said that while he was waiting for an assistant principal to arrive, an intoxicated Stephens confronted him and tried to take his son away.
“Stephens was demanding that I (the officer) explain why his son was being illegally detained,” the arrest report read. “Stephens continued to demand that he take his son, so I told him he needed to leave.”
When Stephens refused to go, the officer said he tried escorting the dad away from the school building, but he refused to go.
The officer noted that Stephen’s breath smelled of alcohol and that his speech was slurred.
The cop then wrestled Stephens to the ground and arrested him at the school, according to the criminal complaint.
Principal Kyle Fender said in a letter to parents that the arrest took place near a group of students waiting to be picked up from the dance.
No staff members were involved in the incident as it was handled by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, which provides the building its school resource officers.
“Due to the nature of the incident, we are limited in how much information we can share,” Fender wrote. “The top priority at Anderson High School is to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
Stephens was booked at the Hamilton County Jail and charged with resisting arrest, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
A representative for Stephens could not be immediately reached for comment.
