Dumisani Dlamini on how Ngema helped make Doja Cat happen

Late last year, Mbongeni Ngema, writer of the acclaimed musical Sarafina, was killed in a car crash at the age of 68. Since his passing thousands of tributes have been made in his honour by those who knew and loved him. During his funeral service, a number of local stars shared beautiful words about the late playwright. Sarafina star Dumisani Dlamini is one of those people.

According to Dlamini, if Ngema had not opened the doors for him to travel abroad, he would not have welcomed his famous daughter Doja Cat into the world.

Powerful words of wisdom

“Most powerful words of wisdom was when he said to me I must make a fear fear me and that I mustn’t walk proud. Make sure you don’t live to impress because you are an impression already …” Dlamini said during an interview with Siphamandla Gobe at the funeral.

He also added that had it not been for Ngema, he would have never travelled abroad and came back with his successful daughter, US singer Doja Cat — real name Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini.

“Yah vele, if ubhuti Mbongeni wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have gone overseas and returned with Doja Cat.”
