Earthquake strikes New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck the New Britain Region in Papua New Guinea.

Geoscience Australia reported the epicentre of earthquake occurred more than 100km south of the town of Kimbe at about 6.50am AEST at a depth of 80km.

It was later revised to be 6.3 magnitude.

New Britain Region is one of four regions in PNG.

Last month, several people died and about 1000 homes were destroyed when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the East Sepik Province.
