Everton succeed with Dominic Calvert-Lewin red card appeal

Everton’s appeal against the red card shown to Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Crystal Palace has been successful.

The England international, 26, was sent off in the second half of Thursday’s 0-0 FA Cup draw at Selhurst Park following a challenge on Palace right-back Nathaniel Clyne.

The tackle initially wasn’t deemed worthy of punishment by referee Chris Kavanagh, before the decision was made to dismiss him following consultation with VAR officials and a review at the pitchside monitor.

Calvert-Lewin was facing the prospect of missing Everton’s next three matches through suspension but will now be free and available for selection.

Manager Sean Dyche was left frustrated by the decision and said he was “losing patience” with VAR.

“Slow-mo shows a different picture” he said. “If you’re going to slow-mo things, then you’re going to have to slow-mo the penalty on Beto, or what could have been a penalty. (The defender) has his arms clearly round him, covering his body, he goes down, and it’s not given.

“So if you’re going to slow-mo it, then you’ve got to slow-mo everything. You can’t just pick it for one and not for the other.

“At the end of the day, there’s contact, it’s minor contact, live time he doesn’t give anything, slows it down and everything looks worse in slow-mo, we all know that.”

Everton are next in action against Aston Villa on Sunday before the replay with Palace, at Goodison Park, on the following Wednesday.
