excise policy case: Arvind Kejriwal arrest: ED seeks 7 days extension of Delhi CM’s custody remand

The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday sought seven days extension of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s custodial remand from Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in the excise policy case.

The AAP national convenor, arrested by the ED on March 21 and subsequently remanded to the federal agency’s custody till March 28, sought his immediate release on the grounds that the arrest was illegal.

Senior Advocate Ramesh Gupta represented Kejriwal in court before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

Meanwhile, ASG SV Raju and special counsel Zoheb Hossain, who appeared for the ED via video conferencing, told the court that the Delhi CM needs to be confronted with some other people.

Enforcement Directorate moved a remand application and ASG Raju said, “We require his (Arvind Kejriwal) further custody for interrogation to confront him with some other people. Statements of some AAP Goa candidates are being recorded.”

“Arvind Kejriwal’s statements have been recorded, and he gave evasive replies. He is deliberately not cooperating with us,” ASG further said. Before being produced in the court, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in response to a media query on Delhi L-G VK Saxena’s ‘government cannot run from jail’ remark said, “This is a political conspiracy, the public will give a befitting reply.” Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave the Enforcement Directorate till April 2 to file a response to Kejriwal’s pleas seeking release from custody. The court refused to interfere with the Aam Aadmi Party supremo’s arrest in connection with the excise policy case.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, had said that the arrested leader will present details of Delhi excise policy case in the court on Thursday.

Sunita referred to the liquorgate case as “so-called Sharab Ghotala” and claimed that no money was found in multiple raids conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED)

In a digital briefing she said that her husband will reveal the truth on March 28 and also present evidence. “Despite two years of probe, the ED has not been able to find even one paisa in evidence. They raided chief minister’s residence but got just Rs 73,000,” Kejriwal’s wife said.

The excise policy case pertains to the alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 that was later scrapped.
