Fabio Carvalho returns to Liverpool from RB Leipzig loan

Liverpool have confirmed the return of Fabio Carvalho to the club following his loan spell at RB Leipzig during the first half of the season.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Liverpool were in talks to bring Carvalho back amid his lack of minutes in Germany, with the 21-year-old likely to head out on loan again for the second half of the campaign.

A number of clubs from England and abroad have shown interest in taking the attacking midfielder despite his struggles with Leipzig.

Carvalho joined Leipzig on a season-long loan deal in June, with Liverpool rejecting permanent offers for him as the 2022-23 season ended.

But he failed to establish himself as a part of Marco Rose’s first team, making just one Bundesliga start and eight further appearances as a substitute. The Portugal Under-21 international also made one start in the first round of the DFB Pokal and one in Leipzig’s final Champions League group game, when they had already secured second place.

Carvalho signed for Liverpool from Fulham for a fee of £5million, with a further £2.7m in add-ons and a 20 per cent sell-on clause, in the summer of 2022. He struggled, though, in his debut season on Merseyside, making only 13 Premier League appearances — with 11 of those coming before December.
