Fire at South Jersey house leaves 1 injured

A person was airlifted to a hospital on Monday morning after a two-alarm fire tore through a house in Atlantic County, sending smoke into the air that was visible for miles.

The fire happened at a house in the 200 block of Betsy Scull Road in Egg Harbor Township around 9 a.m., local police said Monday afternoon.

All five of Egg Harbor Township’s fire departments responded the property, which is located on a rural street of Somers Point Mays Landing Road, police said. Additional firefighters from Ocean, Cape May and Atlantic counties also responded to the scene.

One person sustained non life-threatening injuries, police said. The person’s condition was unclear on Monday afternoon and their identity was not released.

Houses on the street are surrounded by heavy forest, but the fire did not spread into the woodlands surrounding the home or its nearby properties, police said.

A portion of Ocean Heights Avenue was shut down for about three hours while first responders fought the blaze, police said. Egg Harbor Township’s Fire Inspection Unit is investigating what cause the fire and how extensive the damage was to the house.

Bystanders far from the scene captured videos of a large plume of smoke into the air, which could be seen as far as the Garden State Parkway to the east. Multiple photographs appeared to have been taken from several miles away.

The street is commonly known as the access point to Atlantic County’s gun range, which was not forced to shut down temporarily because of the emergency response Monday, police said.
