Former Miss Universe Australia Monique Riley swaps ball gown for boxing gloves ahead of RQCC 2023

Former Miss Universe Australia Monique Riley has revealed why she is swapping her ball gown for boxing gloves as she steps into the RQCC ring alongside Dom Barbagallo and Lia Tapper.

Best-known for its prestige and punches, the modern-day Royal Queensbury Club Championship (RQCC) — created by Perth’s Pink Tank Events — sees everyday people train, eat and live like a professional boxer for 11 weeks before jumping into the ring and fighting for an incredible cause.

This year’s red carpet charity event will see Dom Barbagallo, son of Pink Tank Events founder Troy Barbagallo, and local model Lia Tapper brave the challenge for a second time.

Barbagallo said he “can’t wait” to jump in the ring again, and is looking forward to “having a beer” with his opponent after the final bell.

Tapper spoke to her adoration of everyone who “steps up to the cause” for an experience that is so “rewarding”.

Despite being “nervous” for the result, she says she’s “excited” to get back in the ring, jokingly adding that she’s looking forward to not having to wear heels all night.

With RQCC closing in, we spoke with beauty queen Riley to get the 411 on Friday’s highly-anticipated fight night.

We hear you’re getting in the ring for the first time at RQCC 2023 — how are you feeling?

I’m really excited, it’s been a long time coming really.

I’ve spent years loving the sport and participating for exercise, and comments about me actually having a fight have always been made, but I had never really considered it until RQCC.

I’ve always loved hitting the pads, however to have an opponent that actually hits back certainly gets the blood flowing. The fact that it is all to raise money for a great cause makes being involved even more rewarding.

Why are you taking part this year?

The timing just seemed right. Coming straight off the back of being Miss Universe Australia 2022, I felt RQCC was a great opportunity to show the other side of me.

What has training looked like for you and what keeps you motivated?

Coming into the fight with only four weeks meant that from the moment I made the decision to do the fight, it was go time.

I’ve been running and trying to squeeze in as many sessions as possible between travelling and launching my own business.

Making sure I continue to better myself every day and push myself outside of my comfort zone is what motivates me. Despite having a very good opponent — it’s always me vs. yesterday me.

Why is it important that young women learn self-defence skills, such as boxing?

Overall it really builds your confidence, mentally and physically, which carries through to all areas of your life.

Knowing that you can stand your ground if needed is a very powerful tool, and it has certainly helped me on many occasions.

Why do you think it’s important people in the public eye support charity events such as this?

Because we have the platform to be able to reach and educate a wider audience.

People love to watch boxing, and if they know the person in the ring, it only adds to the entertainment value.

If you win, how will you celebrate?

If I’m fortunate enough to come out with the win, I will be kicking off my boxing boots and stepping into my dancing shoes. No matter what the outcome is, I’m excited to be able to celebrate in the company of those who have helped make this all possible.

Shout out to the exceptional Vogue Dental team who have been my incredible sponsor for the fight.

Do you know your opponent, or any other participants?

I’ve been lucky enough to meet the other incredible athletes involved, including my opponent Soph.

I have so much love and respect for her, which means it’s going to be hard going up against her on the night — but I can’t wait to hug it out after.

Do you have you outfit planned for when the boxing gloves are off?

Certainly! The clue is ‘comfort is key’ but always make sure it’s stylish comfort — it’s an authentic reflection of my personal style.
