Gable Steveson released by WWE with 2024 Olympics twist

Gable Steveson’s failed WWE tenure has come to an end.

The Olympic wrestling gold medalist was among the talent cut by the company on Friday, The Post has confirmed.

The news was first reported by The Observer.

WWE has made at least 10 other cuts to its NXT and developmental roster, most notably Drew Gulak, according to multiple reports.

Steveson, 23, was officially signed by WWE in 2021 but had been linked and coveted by the company well before he won heavyweight gold in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympics.

His arrival was much ballyhooed by WWE.

He was “drafted” to “Monday Night Raw” shortly after signing and before having an official match.

Steveson had just one televised match, as he defeated Baron Corbin at NXT Great American Bash in July 2023 in a bout that was not well-received with fans.

He was last on NXT television in the corner of brother Bobby — who wrestles under the name Jordan Kemp — for an Underground match in June.

Steveson did wrestle 16 non-televised matches, the last coming on Feb. 9 against Cedric Alexander at a SmackDown.

The cut happened to come too late for him to make a run at the Paris Olympics this summer, according to the Observer.

The U.S. Olympic trials were held from April 19-20 at Penn State.

WWE traditionally makes cuts after WrestleMania, which was held on April 7-8 at Lincoln Financial Field.

There were reports in 2022 that WWE wasn’t happy with the progress of Steveson’s training, but later that year, he revealed that he’d been diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome) and had surgery to deal with it.

Prior to signing with WWE, Steveson and fellow University of Minnesota wrestler Dylan Martinez were arrested on suspicion of criminal sexual assault in 2019.

Neither were charged due to “inadequate evidence.”

“One of the challenges for me personally especially over the past several months/years has been reading the criticisms and attacks on my character by people who don’t know me personally and my values,” said in a statement to Ringside news in 2021.

“No charges were ever brought by anyone and the entire episode has been difficult for everyone involved… Going forward people who don’t know me will hopefully see that kindness, respect and empathy are virtues I take very seriously in my life.”
