Hainault stabbing latest: Suspect injured in hospital after child killed in east London sword attack

Police attend ‘critical incident’ amid reports of stabbing near Hainault Tube station

A 14-year-old boy has died and four others taken to hospital after members of the public and police officers were attacked in Hainault by a man wielding a sword in Hainault, northeast London.

Officers were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area, with reports that people had been stabbed.

Four people remain in hospital with injuries believed not to be life-threatening. Both police officers have “significant injuries” and will require surgery, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and police said they were not looking for further suspects. The incident did not appear to be terror-related, nor is there believed to be an ongoing threat to the wider community, police said.

The suspect is also in hospital after sustaining injuries when his van collided with a house in Hainault, meaning police have so far been unable to question him.

One man spoke of how the suspect was involved in a stand-off with police in an alleyway in the Thurlow Gardens area, before hearing a “huge commotion” and a woman screaming.

‘Horrific’ incident a sad reminder of police officers’ ‘incredible bravery’

Today’s “horrific” incident is “a sad reminder of the incredible bravery our officers display and the dangers they face”, the Metropolitan Police Federation.

“The thoughts of all police officers in London are with the family of the 14-year-old boy who was killed today, and all those injured,” said Rick Prior, chair of the group which represents rank-and-file officers.

“This horrific incident is a sad reminder of the incredible bravery our officers display and the dangers they face to keep the public in London safe, day in and day out.

“It’s often forgotten by people who attack our profession and the difficult and dynamic decisions which officers are confronted with on an hourly basis, that we work with heroes whose courage is incredible.

“We shall be supporting our injured colleagues, the officers they work with and their families as best we can at this very difficult time.”
