House That! Birds of Tokyo frontman Ian Kenny moves into Dunsborough Lakes home

As the Dunsborough Lakes development nears completion, one of the biggest names in alternative rock has given the fledgling new area enough street cred to rival some of the hipster neighbourhoods of the South West.

Ian Kenny, frontman from Birds of Tokyo, has purchased a three-bedroom home in the area with wife Naomi Barsden.

While the $750,000 home was purchased late last year, a busy tour schedule that has taken him around the country means he is a relative newcomer to the area.

The South West has long been popular with rock types, including Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who owns iconic Wave House in Yallingup where Beastie Boys, Fat Boy Slim and The Waifs have all recorded songs.

For Kenny fans, the Dunsborough purchase is a bricks-and-mortar sign that the beloved singer has moved on from his acrimonious split with his ex-wife in 2017.

The split inspired his hit song Good Lord and prompted him to leave Melbourne for his hometown of Perth.

Dunsborough lured him further south, first as a renter and more recently as a home-owner.

His new home is fit for a rockstar, with its tropical gardens, expansive windows, polished concrete floors and a Bali-style alfresco area.

Listing agent Steve Hopkins said the family were enjoying an unassuming lifestyle in the area, famous for its wineries and surf.

“When I got his email address I googled him, thinking he might be a roadie for Birds of Tokyo,” he said.

“He is so down-to-earth you wouldn’t expect him to be the lead singer.”

The decision to base himself in Perth is welcome news for other aspiring singers, who have long had to move east to make it in the field. It follows a decision by local outfit Spacey Jane to set up their base in Beaconsfield.

Tame Impala members favour Yallingup and Fremantle while Eurovision star Daniel Estrin is a Highgate local.
