I live on the NC500 – ‘entitled campervan tourists’ keep invading my garden – they think the rules don’t apply to them

AN NC500 local told how she’s had to deal with “entitled” tourists invading her back garden.

The resident was stunned when visitors tackling the popular route decided it would be okay to go through her gate for a better sea view.

And whilst in there they messed about with her chairs and got themselves comfy, without asking for permission.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “It just beggars belief. It’s almost unbelievable, but it’s true.

“They came into my fully fenced off back garden and moved around all the chairs so they could get a perfect view.

“I’ve got no idea why they thought that would be okay. But there are a lot of entitled tourists who think they can just do whatever they want.”

The resident said after the incident her husband was forced to do something totally unexpected to deal with NC500 visitors.

She revealed: “We had to put up signs warning people that this was private property.

“That’s something I never thought would be necessary. I don’t know why anyone would do something like that. But they do.”

The local lives in the village of Kinlochbervie, Sutherland, a popular stop along Scotland’s answer to Route 66.

She reckons most tourists are nice and respectful but the minority think the rules don’t apply to them.

But she told how she was stunned with one vile encounter right outside her front door.

The resident said: “I came home to find someone squatting and doing a pee in my driveway.

“They had parked up their campervan for a picnic or something like that and obviously needed to go.

“I was speechless. But I think I managed to tell them that there are toilets nearby in the village. There is no excuse.”

The NC500 has exploded in popularity in recent years with more visitors than ever before heading north to do it.

But soaring numbers of tourists in camper vans are causing chaos for people who live along the route.

We told how one panicked driver turned up at someone’s door and begged for fuel because they thought a petrol station was too pricey.

While another homeowner revealed she banned visitors from using her toilet.

Incidents of people doing the loo outside have jumped to record highs along the NC500, along with litter levels.

Locals say it’s not unusual for them to catch people pooing outside their homes, or dumping camper van toilet waste near their properties.

It’s feared that this year will be a nightmare because the rangers who used to patrol the route have been axed.

Residents are calling for them to be restored. And they want anyone who breaks the rules to have to face consequences.
