It’s almost as big as the iPhone 16 Plus

When the first iPhone 16 rumors began spreading last year, mentioning a potential size increase for the Pro models, I wasn’t too thrilled about the prospect. Rumors said the iPhone 16 Pro would feature a 6.3-inch display, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max would get a similar 0.2-inch bump to 6.9 inches.

The reason for this was the iPhone 16 Pro’s rear camera module. Apple planned to bring the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s tetraprism zoom lens to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro. That component needs more internal space, hence the overall increase in size. Apple would have to make the iPhone 16 Pro taller and wider to get that 0.2-inch bump, and the same would happen to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Now, I’m not worried. A new iPhone 16 dummy leak proves the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be almost identical to their smaller non-Pro siblings.

I’m a longtime user who has avoided the Pro Max and Plus sizes for years. Strangely enough, I found myself interested in the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 models last year. I wasn’t going to buy the Pro Max or Plus versions, but the larger display started appealing to me.

Maybe it’s an age thing. As I grow older, I need a larger display. But I wasn’t necessarily sold on an upgrade to a 6.7-inch iPhone.

That’s why, upon hearing that the iPhone 16 Pro Max would get a 6.9-inch screen, I didn’t like it. It meant the phone would have an even larger footprint. It would be harder to operate with one hand, and it would occupy more space in my pockets. Then again, the 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro might be just what I needed, thanks to that 0.2-inch display increase.

But also remember that any size increase comes with a weight increase. And I don’t want the iPhone to get heavier.

In the worst-case scenario, I’d just settle for one of the non-Pro versions. After all, the iPhone 14 Pro I currently use proved that I don’t need an iPhone Pro model.

But those early iPhone 16 rumors were incomplete. Reports that followed said Apple wouldn’t just increase the height and width of the iPhone 16 Pros to achieve that 0.2-inch bump. The company also planned to reduce the bezels further. That implied that the actual height and width increases would be smaller than I’d have assumed.

Since then, at least two sets of purported iPhone 16 dummy units have leaked. I said they were probably genuine. This happens with every iPhone generation. At some point during the spring, the dummy units emerge, as accessory makers need them to manufacture new cases and screen protectors for the next-gen iPhones.

Those leaks also made me realize that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max wouldn’t be that much bigger than the non-Pro phones. But today’s leak really settles the matter for me. The same Sonny Dickson, who posted a set of iPhone 16 dummy units before, is back with more images.

This time around, the iPhone dummies are colored. They look like actual products, making a comparison between them much easier.

Yes, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is larger than the iPhone 16 Plus. The same goes for the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s a few millimeters taller and wider than the iPhone 16. But I’d have no problem getting either iPhone 16 Pro model this year despite the size increase.

However, size is just one factor. While I know I’ll upgrade to one of the four iPhone 16 versions this fall, I still don’t know which one I’ll get.
