Jimmy Garoppolo lands with Rams after underwhelming stint with Raiders

Once the potential heir to Tom Brady, journeyman Jimmy Garoppolo has another new home.

According to ESPN, he’s agreed to a one-year contract with the Rams.

Garoppolo, who signed a lucrative three-year, $72 million deal with the Raiders last off-season, was eventually benched for rookie fourth-round pick Aidan O’Connell and then subsequently cut one year into the contract.

The Raiders signed fellow journeyman Gardner Minshew, who started for the Colts this season, to a multi-year deal after cutting Garoppolo.

Garoppolo recently violated the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy and will serve a two-game suspension to start the 2024 season, but afterward, he’s expected to be the backup to Rams starter Matthew Stafford.

Garoppolo, 32, was famously selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft as the potential successor to Brady, who some speculated was inching toward retirement or would be shipped away from the Patriots.

But Garoppolo never did get that opportunity and was traded to the 49ers prior to the 2017 season.

The Eastern Illinois alumnus will now join his third team in as many seasons.

With the Raiders, the signal-caller started just six games before his benching, leading the Raiders to a 3-3 record.

He finished with 1,205 passing yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in his seven appearances during the season.

Garoppolo recorded his lowest quarterback rating as a starter in his career at 77.7 last season.
