L.A. businesses, artists, trauma experts help Israeli children affected by war – Daily News
Craig Dershowitz, the CEO of the Los Angeles non-profit Artists 4 Israel, got busy a “Healing Arts Kit” a package of toy-like items for children to use and play with, designed to slow or stop the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has the help of Los Angeles businesses and art communities who are “coming together to help children traumatized by the October 7 attack,” his organization said in a statement.
Dershowitz says his non-profit has sent 3,000 kits to children in Israel since October 7. A partnership between the Artists 4 Israel and Shugar Soapworks, a company owned by Los Angeles businessman Dan Shugar, got it off the ground.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Shugar Soapworks opened up its factory in the City of Commerce to the public, and families and church and synagogue members came to help pack the Healing Arts Kits — and learned how art can fight trauma.

According to a statement from Dershowitz, each item in the Healing Arts Kits was carefully chosen by a team of international psychiatrists, psychologists, and art therapists “to take a child through activities that have a therapeutic effect without the child even needing instruction.”
It turns out that blowing bubbles requires deep breathing that regulates the entire nervous system. And playing with clay “grounds the child in the present moment.” And finger puppets designed to look like “strong animals” can given children a sense of personal power.
“My mother was from Jerusalem,” says Dan Shugar, owner of Shugar Soapworks, in a statement. “Being tied to Israel through family and through the love of that country, after October 7, I wanted to do everything I could to support any kind of healing.”
