Labor still leads in Victoria, Resolve poll shows

The Labor government in Victoria retains the support of the majority of voters, despite a slip in its primary vote, a poll shows.

The Resolve Political Monitor published on Thursday in The Age pegs Labor’s primary vote at 39 per cent, down from 41 per cent previously.

This compares to 28 per cent for the coalition, up from 26 per cent in June.

Resolve surveyed 1047 voters in July and August. The poll’s margin of error for results is plus or minus three per cent.

On a preferred leader basis, the poll showed support for Premier Daniel Andrews dropped to 44 per cent, from 49 per cent while support for Opposition Leader John Pesutto rose to 29 per cent, from 26 per cent.

The Resolve poll also found 39 per cent of votes opposed or strongly opposed the state government’s decision to dump the 2026 Commonwealth Games, against 35 per cent in favour.

At the same time, 44 per cent oppose or strongly oppose Labor’s decision to ban gas connections for new homes, against 30 per cent in favour and 26 per cent undecided.
