When asked how the toothbrush had made its way into his penis, the unnamed Indonesian man said it was pushed up there for “sexual satisfaction”.

The practice of surgically inserting objects under the foreskin, also known as genital beading, is more common in certain parts of the world, including parts of Asia.

Some decide to undergo the procedure to make their penises appear more structured and to please their partners in the bedroom.

When revealing more details of his DIY surgery, medics were told the man had been shoving brushes up his penis through a “small incision” since 2017.

They said the man had waited 12 long hours before seeking medical attention for his penis, which he said had curved, was painful and very swollen.

After an examination, doctors from the Soetomo General Academic Hospital in East Java decided he had an “eggplant deformity”, a sign of a penis fracture.

They were forced to perform a two-hour op to repair his broken penis and dislodge the toothbrush.

Writing in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, they said: “The patient sustained a penile injury during sexual intercourse in the woman-on-top position the night before.”

What is a penile fracture? At what positions out you most at risk?

Penile fracture is rupture of either one or both of the tunica albuginea (the membranes that cover the penis’s erectile tissue.)

It is caused by rapid blunt force to an erect penis.

This typically occurs during vaginal intercourse, or aggressive masturbation.

If you feel any pain after sex, it’s always important to visit a doctor.

In many cases, patients will leave their injuries untreated because of embarrassment, but you definitely shouldn’t if you want to overcome the problem.

Experts say the most dangerous sex positions for penile fractures include:

  • Doggy style
  • Missionary (man on top)
  • Cowgirl (woman on top)
  • Reverse cowgirl

Medics said the man was discharged three days after surgery with no issues.

He returned for a follow-up appointment one month later, where doctors noticed the “deformity” had disappeared.

At this stage, he was also able to pass urine and claimed not to have any long-lasting issues in the bedroom.

Penile fracture, the experts said, mostly occurs during vigorous sex.

The penis comes out of the vagina before being thrust too forcefully into the pubic bone or perineum between the vagina and anus).

A small number of men have snapped their penis during masturbation or by falling out of bed with an erection.

The key three features are hearing a “snapping sound”, swelling and bruising (hematoma).

Sexologist Dr Boyke Dian Nugraha said that while some go to extreme lengths to enlarge their penises, these methods are not effective.

“People inject silicone, insert horse hair, stones, and beads into their penises, but they’re just ploys to increase men’s self-esteem that serve no actual function,” Dr Boyke previously told Indonesian local media.
