Mark Schlereth rips Cowboys’ Jerry Jones over Trey Lance trade

Mark Schlereth did not hold back about how he felt about Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

The Fox analyst and three-time Super Bowl champion gave Jones a tongue-lashing over Jones’ decision to trade for Trey Lance while keeping head coach Mike McCarthy in the dark.

Jones also failed to notify Dak Prescott of what he was doing.

None of that sat well with Schlereth, and he used his weekly podcast “Stinkin’ Truth” to candidly discuss Jones.

“This is why the Cowboys will never win s–t because Jerry Jones can’t help himself,” Schlereth said on the show. “I said it, it’s there.

“You think about Jerry Jones, you’re gonna go out there and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization, Steven Jones, your head coach Mike McCarthy, your quarterback.”

Schlereth, who played 12 seasons in the NFL with Washington and Denver, admitted that his issue wasn’t so much that Prescott wasn’t clued in as much as McCarthy wasn’t heavily involved.

McCarthy told reporters that he had been part of the evaluation, but he was left out of the business end of the matter.

“’I really don’t care if you involve your quarterback in it or not,” Schlereth continued. “But to not involve your head coach. What does it say about your head coach? ‘Hey guys, I know he’s your head coach, but he truly has no authority within this organization. So, you don’t have to listen to him. You don’t have to pay attention because the buck stops with me. Your coach doesn’t have the authority to fire you. I do.’

“You cannot win in the National Football League that way.”

The Cowboys are once again coming into the regular season with high expectations in the NFC East after finishing 12-5 last year.

Schlereth agrees with the pundits that Dallas can make an impact during the regular season, but his confidence in the team once it hits the postseason isn’t as high.

The Cowboys have made the playoffs in five of the last 10 seasons, but they’ve failed to go further than the divisional round during that span.

The last time they won a Super Bowl was 1995, and since then, they have not reached a conference championship game.

“Oh, they may win a bunch of regular season games because they’re talented,”  Schlereth said. “They’ll get in the playoffs and they’ll s–t in their helmets like they do every year.
