Matildas names ‘gayest team’ at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
The Matildas might not have won it all, but they have won ‘gayest team’ at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
There were 32 teams competing in the cup and with 12 out and proud players the Matildas won gayest of them all.
The title was given to the team by thepinknews.com touted as the largest LGBTQ+ media brand.
“Wednesday’s semi-final will mark a win for queer representation in sport, regardless of the final score,” the outlet wrote in an article ahead of the Matildas match against the Lionesses.

They estimated there were about 100 openly LGBTQ+ players and coaches across the tournament.
This World Cup was also a win for trans and non-binary representation with Canada’s Quinn.
The star footballer became the first trans, non-binary Olympic gold medallist in 2021 at the Tokyo games.
They came out as non-binary in 2020 saying how they want to be: “visible to queer folks who don’t see people like them on their feed” because “it saved [their] life years ago”.
