If you’re looking to dunk on Meghan Markle, comedy powerhouse and Sussex pal Melissa McCarthy has no time for it. During the opening night for the new Broadway musical Suffs Thursday, McCarthy mused on the vitriol her friend inspires in some audiences, sharing her thoughts with Page Six.
“It bums me out for every woman and every person, that for no reason people just like to attack,” she said of Meghan, who, with her husband Prince Harry, resigned from her role as a senior working member of the British royal family in 2020.
“A smart interesting woman that has her own life, for some reason, is incredibly threatening to some people,” McCarthy said. “I always think, how inspiring! I’ve never once been threatened by someone who is amazing. I just think how inspiring. It’s really on the people throwing the hate.”
Suffs tells the story of some key figures in the women’s suffrage movement in the 1920s, a fitting thematic parallel to McCarthy’s message of solidarity with another woman.
In 2021, McCarthy appeared in a video celebrating Meghan’s 40th birthday, donning a variety of hats and helping her friend announce her 40×40 women’s mentorship campaign.
Meghan’s latest endeavor is her soon-to-launch American Riviera Orchard lifestyle line. Last week, the world laid eyes on what appears to be the company’s first product: A chic jar of strawberry jam. Markle sent out hand-numbered bundles of the spread to friends, teasing the imminent line. Whether McCarthy was on the jam list, there’s no doubt that she’s spreading love, toast or not.
