Brewers get: LHP Andrew Chafin
Diamondbacks get: RHP Peter Strzelecki
Andy McCullough: Chafin, the mustachioed lefty, saw his ERA jump from 2.97 to 4.24 after getting shellacked for five runs in an inning a couple weeks ago. He’s got a lot going for him, able to miss bats and generate chases outside the zone with his fastball and slider. The only problem, of course, is that walk rate. His ability to seduce hitters outside the zone is negated by the fact that those pitches are often outside the zone.
In dealing away Chafin, while the team is still contending for a postseason spot, it demonstrates some faith in Joe Mantiply’s ability to return to the majors. Mantiply, another lefty reliever, was an All-Star last season before falling off in 2023. Or maybe they just believe in Strzelecki, a 28-year-old righty who had decent strikeout numbers before getting sent back to the minors in late June.
