modi biden talks: Biden reaffirms support for a reformed UNSC with India as a permanent member

The United States president Joe Biden held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday ahead of the the official commencement of G20 summit in New Delhi.

The US president reaffirmed his support for a reformed Unite Nations Security Council (UNSC) with India as a permanent member. Biden welcomed India’s candidature for the UNSC non-permanent seat in 2028-29.

PM Modi and the US president underscored the need to strengthen and reform the multilateral system so it may better reflect contemporary realities and remain committed to a comprehensive UN reform agenda, including through expansion in permanent and non-permanent categories of membership of the UN Security Council, said a White House statement.

Earlier in June, Biden had extended his support to India’s candidature for a permanent seat at the UNSC.

The leaders also reiterated their support for building resilient global semiconductor supply chains.

According to the statement, the leaders expressed satisfaction at the ongoing implementation of announcements made in June 2023 by US companies, Micron, LAM Research, and Applied Materials.Biden also congratulated PM Modi on Chandrayaan-3’s historic landing at the south polar region of the Moon, as well as the successful launch of India’s first solar mission, Aditya-L1.The talks were held at PM Modi’s official residence — 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi — and covered wide-ranging issues focussing on deepening bilateral ties.

Speaking on the meeting, PM Modi said that the friendship between India and the US will continue to play a great role in furthering global good.

India has been pressing for reform of the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council.

New Delhi has been particularly upset over lack of any meaningful movement forward in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform.

India is a strong contender for a permanent membership at the UN Security Council (UNSC).

At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the UN.

The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution.

There has been growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
