Nat Locke: I love travelling and experiencing other cultures, but I don’t want to negatively impact the locals

Having finally returned from my travels (and yes, predictably, there were issues returning home due to the flooding in Dubai. I am aware that I am cursed, but I had a lovely bonus day in Prague), it’s time for some serious self-reflection.

The protests by locals in the Canary Islands have raised the issue of whether tourism is actually a good thing. Up to 50,000 Canary Islanders took part, including 11 who went on a hunger strike. While they’re not against tourism per se, they were objecting to the current model, which they say is unsustainable and negatively impacting their lives by driving up rental prices and depleting natural resources.
