Nottingham Forest supporter group call for City Ground safe standing after ban risk

A Nottingham Forest supporter group has called on safe standing to be introduced at the City Ground after fans were told they were at risk of being banned for persistent standing.

Forest supporters received an email on Wednesday warning against persistent standing during games for safety reasons and to ensure the club complied with its license to host fixtures.

Liverpool became the latest Premier League clubs to be granted a safe standing license on Wednesday and Forest supporter movement Forza Garibaldi called on the club to follow suit.

Forza Garibaldi wrote on Twitter: “We have been vocal in the past about the merits of safe standing and why we feel it should be introduced at the City Ground. An email from the club this morning re persistent standing shows how important safe standing is, so fans who wish to stand can do so safely.”

All-seater stadiums were introduced following the Taylor Report in 1990, after 97 Liverpool supporters died as a result of the Hillsborough disaster during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Forest.

The UK government allowed clubs in the Premier League and Championship to introduce limited safe standing ahead of the 2022-23 season following a successful pilot.

Several Premier League clubs including Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United now have standing sections.
