NSW’s most popular baby names revealed

The most popular baby names for 2023 in NSW have been revealed.

For the first time ever, Isla has been crowned the most popular choice for girls’ names, while Oliver was the most common name for baby boys born in NSW for the ninth time in a decade.

Isla moved up from third spot in 2022 to just make number one in 2023, with Amelia only four registered births behind as parents’ second most common choice for girls.

Rounding out the top 10 were Olivia, Mia, Charlotte, Ava, Lily, Sophia, Evelyn and Matilda.

Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra were all girls’ names that made it into the top 100 for the first time.

Riley, Gabriella, Harlow, Claire, Anastasia, Leah, Charlie, Elodie, Jasmine and Quinn slipped out of the 100 most popular girls’ names in 2023.

For boys, Oliver regained its position as number one after it lost the top spot to Noah in 2022.

But Noah remained popular as the second most common boys’ name in 2023, followed by Leo, Henry, Theodore, Luca, Hudson, William, Lucas and Charlie.

Eight new names made it into the top 100 for boys — Miles, Isaiah, Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo and Marcus.

Christian, Nicholas, Hamish, Vincent, Connor, Ashton, Dylan and Julian all dropped out of the top 100.

Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages Theresa Fairman congratulated all families who welcomed a newborn in 2023 and said that each child was precious.

“Whether you choose an old classic or a new trend setter, registering a name is easy and must be done within 60 days of the child being born,” she said.

“Finding the right name to give to your baby can challenging but we hope our list of popular names helps you find the one that’s just right for you.

“After registration, parents can check out the growing range of commemorative birth certificates which can be purchased at any time, for people of any age born or adopted in NSW.”

There were 85,819 registered births for babies born in NSW in the 2023 calendar year, as of April 30 this year, according to the NSW Department of Customer Service.
