Perth weather: State braces for severe thunderstorm before ‘nuisance’ showers

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Perth, with heavy rain and damaging winds expected on Tuesday.

Although it may have felt like the start of spring on the weekend, winter is certainly not over in Perth.

A pre-frontal cold front is moving across the State, and will have the biggest impact on Perth’s southern suburbs and the Mandurah area.

“We’re encouraging people to take care until we know what this system is doing,” Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jessica Lingard said.

The system is likely to pass by midday, but Ms Lingard said it was still a case of “wait and see” if it cleared completely.

Once the storm clears, a high-pressure ridge is set to settle in quickly, making way for “pretty decent” weather on Wednesday, with mostly clear skies and a top of 18C expected.

But don’t get your hopes up — another cold front will move over the metro area on Thursday set to bring “nuisance showers” right through until at least Monday.

Ms Lingard said Perth was moving towards the “flippy floppy” part of the year, where we see sunny days, but still a bit of rain ahead of spring.
