Police scramble after car stolen with child inside

A two-year-old boy is back safely with his father after the car he was in was stolen in Melbourne’s east.

Police launched an urgent search on Monday after his dad’s black Kia Carnival was stolen after it was involved in a bingle on Cleeland Street in Dandenong at 3.25pm on Monday.

“The exact circumstances are yet to be determined but the vehicle was parked with the two-year-old child in the rear seat when it was stolen,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said at the time.

About an hour later, the little boy was found more than 16km away wandering the aisles of Ferntree Gully Woolworths by a member of the public.

Despite the boy being found, police are still searching for the thief.

Police have appealed to the public that if they see the black Kia Carnival with registration 1WU5QT to immediately call triple-0.

“The victim stepped out of his car and walked behind his vehicle to talk to the driver. While this took place, an opportunistic person came to the vehicle and the victim saw his car being driven away,” police said at the scene.

Witnesses say they saw the vehicle driving towards Heatherton Road.

Anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, information or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

More to come.
