Proposed $12 million redevelopment of old Waikiki Hotel site delayed as parking plans fall short

The developers behind a $12 million overhaul of the former Waikiki Hotel site — which includes plans for a 1000-person capacity tavern — have been given more time to come up with a plan for parking, despite arguing they should be able to use public bays for beachgoers.

The 13,000sqm site at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Malibu Road has been vacant since the former motel built in 1960 — understood to have been one of WA’s first motels — was demolished in 2009 before the owner subsequently went into administration.
