San Francisco won’t trade Nick Bosa amid contract holdout, Kyle Shanahan says

The San Francisco 49ers won’t trade defensive end Nick Bosa amid his contract holdout, coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Bosa missed the entirety of the 49ers training camp while waiting for an extension to get done. He is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract.
  • Bosa was extension eligible last offseason, but agreed with the 49ers to put negotiations off until this year. That decision paid off for Bosa, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who posted 18.5 sacks and 51 total tackles in 2022.
  • When speaking on the situation Wednesday, John Lynch was succinct, saying “No, real simple” when asked if there is any percentage chance the 49ers would consider trading Bosa. Lynch added there were “no updates” on contract negotiations with the star pass rusher.

Backstory

The 49ers drafted Bosa with the second pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He posted nine sacks, 47 total tackles and an interception in his rookie season. He played in only two games in the 2020 season before tearing his ACL.

Bosa returned for the 2021 season and didn’t miss a beat, recording 15.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and 52 total tackles. He tacked onto that sack total last year.

When the 2023 season ended, Bosa was not worried about a new deal getting done. “I’m definitely going to have patience and probably not worry about it for some time,” Bosa said after the season ended in January. “I have an amazing agent who will handle all of that and I’ll just enjoy my time off and get ready to roll next year.” That was seven months ago, and now the time is ticking for general manager John Lynch and Bosa’s agent, Brian Ayrault, to get a deal done so Bosa shows up Week 1.
