The music from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Last of Us,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “American Symphony” and “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” received Composers’ Choice Awards Thursday night from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
Daniel Pemberton won Film Score of the Year for the animated “Spider-Man” sequel; David Fleming took Television Score of the Year for HBO’s “Last of Us”; Siddhartha Khosla received Television Theme of the Year honors for Hulu’s “Only Murders”; Jon Batiste earned Documentary Score of the Year for “American Symphony”; and Gordy Haab won Video Game Score of the Year for EA’s “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.”
The Composers Choice Awards are voted by members of the ASCAP composer and songwriter community and are unique among awards given by performing-rights organizations. Composers and songwriters choose from among five nominees in each category, all determined by film, TV and game industry leaders.
Also announced Thursday at the ASCAP Screen Awards Celebration (an invitation-only party held at the Houdini Estate in Los Angeles) were the ASCAP Screen Music Awards, which recognized 93 prominent film and television composers for their work in the highest-grossing films and most popular TV projects of 2023.
Pemberton won Top Box Office Film of the Year for “Across the Spider-Verse,” while industry veteran David Vanacore was named Most Performed Themes and Underscore winner for his work on shows including “Survivor,” “The Kardashians” and “The Daily Show.”
Top-rated Streaming Series winners included Robert Duncan for “The Night Agent,” Natalie Holt for “Loki,” Bear McCreary for “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” and the team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis for “Unprisoned.”
Among Top-rated Streaming Film winners were Germaine Franco for “The Mother,” Marcus Miller for “Candy Cane Lane” and Lorne Balfe for his music in “Tetris” and “Ghosted.”
Top-rated Network Television Series honors went to “NCIS,” with its theme by Matthew Hawkins, Maurice “m.0” Jackson and Neil Martin, collectively known as Numeriklab. The Top Cable Television Series award went to John Sereda for his music in “When Calls the Heart.”
