Selfish Ben Nevis hikers branded ‘manky ratbags’ as UK’s highest mountain turned into a ‘dumping ground’

SCOTS have been left speechless after shocking video footage showed the disgusting state the shelter at the summit of Ben Nevis has been left in.

The video of the shelter atop Scotland’s largest mountain, designed to be used as refuge from storms, shows it turned into a dumping ground.

Filled with lazy hikers’ rubbish, the small structure, which features little more than a bed for lost or endangered hikers, resembles a landfill more than a shelter.

Scotland’s largest mountain attracts 125,000 walkers a year and can present a real danger to inexperienced hikers, with the shelter offering safety to those who may be struggling and in need of rest.

The shelter in its current state, however, offers little comfort to lost or exhausted hikers with the littering leaving it filthy and appealing.

Video of the inside of the stone-built shelter shows dozens of discarded drinks cans, black bin bags full of rubbish and vandalism on the walls.

The aluminium floor of the shelter has been left covered in filth and is almost impossible to see under the piles of discarded litter.

The walls have been covered in graffiti with walkers writing their names all over the building and putting up stickers on the inside of the shelter.

Even the single red camping bed at the back of the room has been covered in rubbish and left forgotten about.

A large black, plastic tarpaulin can be seen covering one side of the shelter, left discarded there by a hiker.

The footage of the ruined shelter left Scots hikers furious after it was shared on social media on Saturday (MAY 4) with the caption: “Anyone for a night in the Ben Nevis summit shelter? Pretty grim scene inside.”

The clip has since received dozens of likes and comments from social media users who were left appalled at the state the shelter has been left in.

One user said: “Not a pretty sight, same with all top peaks… think of base camp Everest, even worse.

“The challenge is changing this mindset of people.”

Another added: “Manky ratbags – they have no thought, care or shame.”

A third wrote: “Makes no sense to me, they carry it all at full weight, consume it then refuse to carry the almost weightless packaging homeward. Senseless idiots.”

Another replied: “Horrible. Just horrible.”
