Shedeur Sanders Under Fire for Trashing Ex-Teammate

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders — the son of coach Deion Sanders — is facing backlash for his response to a former teammate calling out his father.

In a recent story from The Athletic, defensive back Xavier Smith detailed his experience at Colorado in the program’s first year under Deion. Smith claimed that despite Deion advising him to enter the transfer portal, he stayed at Colorado with the intent to prove himself. During the season, however, Smith “felt more like an extra in the background” and “struggled” to get Deion’s attention.

Smith eventually transferred to Austin Peay.

After seeing the quotes himself, Shedeur took it upon himself to dismiss Smith’s ability on the field in defense of his father.

“[I don’t] even remember him [to be honest],” Shedeur tweeted. “Bro had to be very mid at best.”

Shedeur will likely declare for the 2025 NFL Draft with the hopes of being a top pick. With this in mind, many were wondering why someone with aspirations to be a franchise QB in the NFL would openly trash a former teammate.
