South Australian man Troy Smith charged with drug offences in Bali

A South Australian has been charged with drug offences in Bali after local police allegedly found him with 3.5g of methamphetamine.

Troy Smith and his wife, from Port Lincoln, were arrested in Changu on May 2 and interrogated by officers at police headquarters in Denpasar.

His wife was released without charge, but Smith has been remanded in custody.

His lawyer told 7NEWS he will argue Smith is suffering from a drug addiction and will request he be admitted to a rehabilitation facility rather than imprisoned.

Smith has formerly worked as a fisherman and at the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of Smith’s circumstances.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to an Australian man detained in Bali,” a spokesperson said.
