Storm politics in Jalpaiguri: Mamata Banerjee slams PM Modi, promises relief for victims

Jalpaiguri: There is politics over relief and rehabilitation in Jalpaiguri for the storm victims. Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for not mentioning the storm affected people in Jalpaiguri’s Moynaguri. Jalpaiguri Constituency will vote for the first phase on April 19.

Expressing her grievance, Mamata Banerjee said, “The Prime Minister and Union Home Minister came to Bengal but they did not once mention about storm affected people in Jalpaiguri.” On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee has announced her decision to give Rs 1.20 lakh to the victims, whose houses were damaged and broken. She even emphasized in various rallies that she had rushed at midnight to Jalpaiguri, when she heard that Moynaguri, some areas of Alipurduar and Coochbehar were affected.

Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday from a public rally in Jalpaiguri’s Fulbari that she will give Rs 1.20 lakh and Rs 20,000 has already been disbursed by the state administration and the rest will be disbursed for the people who were affected in the storm.

Mamata Banerjee claimed ECI has not allowed the state administration to give funds and BJP is playing games over relief and rehabilitation. Same issue was raised by Trinamool National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress is targeting the North Bengal seats, specially focussing on the first and second phase seats, which were predominantly won by BJP.

The Trinamool Supremo even urged people of Jalpaiguri today to “shun BJP” and not vote for them in the Lok Sabha polls. On the night of the storm, Mamata Banerjee had reached Jalpaiguri’s Moynaguri at midnight. She even met the people in the relief centres and claimed that many people have lost their homes. She has reached out to three seats-Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Coochebehar.”In North Bengal, BJP received all the seats. Why will you vote for BJP when we are doing developmental work? What is our fault? Why don’t you shun BJP this time and vote for Trinamool. Trinamool is always with people, working for the people. Then why will you vote for BJP? she said.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee is keeping no stones unturned to boost Trinamool Congress in the North Bengal region. A ten member Trinamool MP and leaders’ delegation visited storm hit people in Maynaguri on Friday. Trinamool Congress National general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said they will help people even if ECI and BJP create roadblock.

“…I, along with our delegation, met the storm-affected families of Jalpaiguri & assured them that regardless of the roadblocks created by ECI & BJP, GoWB will provide Rs 1.2 lakh to rehabilitate the shelterless. No one can stop us from serving our Ma, Mati, Manush!” Abhishek Banerjee had tweeted yesterday after promising the money for the distressed people.
