Tanzania: JNU confers Tanzania president with honorary doctorate | India News

NEW DELHI: Not just the beauty of its landscape, but also the generosity, and the kindness of its people, makes India, “Incredible India” said Samia Suluhu Hassan the first woman President of Tanzania. She made these comments while receiving the honorary doctorate degree conferred by Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday, while acknowledging herself as a “product of Indian education,” attributing it to her ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme) training at the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD), Hyderabad.
With IIT-Madras starting its operations from Zanzibar this year, Tanzania becomes the first destination for an India’s IIT’s international campus.
Hassan was presented the Honoris Causa citation by Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, vice chancellor, JNU for her role in fostering stronger India-Tanzania relations, promoting economic diplomacy, and achieving success in regional integration and multilateralism, in the presence of Union minister for education and skill development and entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan, minister of external affairs S Jaishankar and minister of state for education, Annapurna Devi and other dignitaries.Speaking on the occasion, Hassan said that India is an extended family member “simply separated by a coastline, a strategic ally, a dependable partner and a friend for all seasons,” as she highlighted that India has remained truthful and loyal to the cause of the Global South and the developing countries. She appreciated that India has continued to uphold the importance of multilateralism, and valuing society over market (people over profit).
Congratulating Hassan on her felicitation, Pradhan also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for working tirelessly to include the African Union as part of G-20. Jaishankar said that the conferment of an educational honour to Hassan recognises the long association and friendship she has with India.
