The Cocktails at ‘& Juliet’ Are As Much Fun As The Show

Part of the fun of attending a Broadway show is enjoying a cocktail in one of those plastic sippy cups you can bring to your seat (and then take home as a souvenir). The fun, high energy jukebox musical “& Juliet” on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre has several thematic drinks for audience members to choose from, and all of them are expertly crafted concoctions.

At a recent matinee of this musical that retells the story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — if Juliet didn’t end it all and went on a journey of self-discovery — is filled with pop anthems including “Since U Been Gone‚” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life‚” “That’s The Way It Is“ and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” all by hit songwriter/producer Max Martin. The drinks for sale before the show and during intermission all have names that are sly references to the songs and are also delicious blends of ingredients that help turn the show into an even bigger party than it already is.

I sampled a vodka-based cocktail, “Shake the Ground” (a reference to the Katy Perry hit, “Roar”) and the bartender told me this was the most popular drink — and for good reason. Ginger, lime, guava and mint make this an easy sipper. Since it was served in a cool sippy cup, I didn’t initially notice its appealing pink hue. The ginger was at the forefront of this drink, and it didn’t taste overly boozy or too sweet.

The “Head in the Clouds” cocktail references the Ariana Grande song, “Problem” which in a medley with “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd is one of the highlights of the show. This is refreshing spin on a gin and tonic, featuring Hendrick’s gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon, tonic and cucumber syrup. As a gin-lover, this would be my top choice to order after Act One!

When I attended, the bar was also offering the “Since U Been Gone,” a fun Frosé (frozen rosé) cocktail that is as irresistible as the music and the high energy of the cast. For tequila lovers (and Backstreet Boys fans), there’s “My Fire” and whiskey drinkers will definitely go for the “Oops!” a not-so-innocent drink.

What are some of your favorite thematic cocktails you’ve had on Broadway? I would love to hear from you!

“& Juliet” is playing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, 124 W. 43rd St., New York, NY and you can get tickets here.
